THE PAINTED BIRD VáCLAV MARHOU SARAJEVO FILM FESTIVAL

Interview with Václav Marhoul, the director of The Painted Bird

Film presented as part of cinema Meeting Point "Dealing with past" programme

Václav Marhoul (born 30 January 1960 in Prague) is a Czech film director, screenwriter and actor. He studied at Prague's FAMU, graduating in 1984. He directed his first film Mazaný Filip, based on Raymond Chandler's books, in 2003. In 2008, his second film Tobruk was premiered. His latest film The Painted Bird, based on Jerzy Kosiński's novel of the same title, premiered at the 76th Venice International Film Festival.

The Painted Bird is a deeply dramatic story examining the immediate relationship between terror and cruelty on one side and innocence and love on the other through the eyes of Joska a young boy stranded alone in World War II Eastern Europe. The film is currently a part of "Dealing with the past" programme by cinema Meeting Point Sarajevo, and this was the occasion for us to do the following interview with director Marhoul.
